IRD Opens First Public Library in Zaatari Camp

IRD opened the first public library in Zaatari camp last Sunday, the 25^th of August. The library consists of a caravan filled with shelves of books and a big nearby tent with a seating area for those who want to read. The books include many genres for different ages. Books range from history, novels, scientific encyclopedias, to children’s books and educational books for different ages, consisting 30% of the available books. Moreover, there are books targeting women’s interests, in addition to many other different topics.

A committee consisting of Syrians living in the camp volunteered to design the shelves in the library and construct them inside the caravan. They also joined the opening ceremony that was attended by people from the camp as well as humanitarian employees in the camp including some special guests. One member of the committee called Adham Hariri recited a poem that he wrote talking about the importance of reading and the significance of opening this library in the camp. After which a 5 year old girl named Ro’a sang a song called “Children of the World” in both Arabic and Italian, then a song called “I Will Write my Country’s Name” accompanied by an Oud player from the camp’s residents called Abu Ayman.

The library was funded by IRD, while some books were donated by NRC (Norwegian Refugee Council) and Action Aid. The library will be expanded in the near future with another caravan and a wider selection of books.

الإغاثة والتنمية الدولية تفتتح أول مكتبة عامة في مخيم الزعتري

قامت منظمة الإغاثة والتنمية الدولية IRD  الأحد الماضي الخامس والعشرين من آب بافتتاح أول مكتبةٍ عامةٍ في مخيم الزعتري، وتضم المكتبة التي هي عبارةٌ عن كرفانٍ للكتب وخيمةٍ كبيرةٍ للجلوس والمطالعة كتباً مختلفةً تشمل شتى القطاعات والاهتمامات والفئات العمرية المختلفة؛ من الكتب التاريخية والروايات والمجلات والموسوعات العلمية والثقافية إلى قصص ومجلات الأطفال والكتب التعليمية المختلفة التي تستهدف الأطفال بمختلف فئاتهم العمرية والتي تصل نسبتها إلى ثلاثين بالمائة من إجمالي عدد الكتب، إضافةً لكتب تعنى باهتمامات المرأة، وغير ذلك من مواضيع متنوعة.

وقامت لجنةٌ مكونةٌ من السوريين المتطوعين ممن يقطنون داخل المخيم بتصميم وتركيب رفوف المكتبة وترتيب الأثاث فيها، إضافةً لمشاركتهم في حفل الافتتاح الذي حضره حشدٌ من سكان المخيم إضافةً لموظفي المنظمات وبعض ضيوف الشرف؛ حيث ألقى أحد أعضاء لجنة المتطوعين ويدعى “أدهم الحريري” خاطرةً شعريةً من تأليفه، تحدث فيها عن أهمية القراءة وأهمية افتتاح صرحٍ كهذا في المخيم، ثم قامت طفلةٌ في الخامسة من عمرها تدعى “رؤى” بأداء أغنية ” يا أطفال العالم” باللغتين العربية والإيطالية، ثم أغنية “بكتب اسمك يا بلادي”، يرافقها على العود عازفٌ من سكان المخيم أيضاً ويدعى “أبو أيمن”.

يذكر أن إنشاء المكتبة وشراء الكتب تم على نفقة منظمة الإغاثة والتنمية الدولية، إضافةً لبعض الكتب التي تم تقديمها من كلٍ من مجلس اللاجئين النرويجي NRC ومنظمة التعاون الدولي الدنمركية Action Aid، وسيتم إضافة كرفانٍ آخر للمكتبة وتزويده بعددٍ آخر من الكتب خلال الفترة المقبلة.

The Time Machine

 When we were kids, we used to watch a cartoon show named The Time Machine; it showed a machine that was capable of taking us to the past or the future, showing us stories from the time it takes us to. Now and here, in my own imagination, the time machine turned into reality; so I asked it to take me to the future of Syria after the war. At first, it took me to where my school used to be, to find out that its walls were destroyed, its doors were damaged, and its seats were turned upside down, after it used to be packed with students in the courtyard, then the supervisor would ring the bell to announce the end of the break, and some students would run around to make use of the little time left to buy food quickly before going back to their classes…

I felt very sad for what I saw, so I rushed to the time machine and told it to take me to my neighborhood. When I arrived there I found that the near bakery had been abandoned, and is now covered with black because of the bombing and damage that happened to its surroundings, unlike how it used to be back in the day; when the smell of delicious, fresh bread used to spread around, how people used to stand in the queue, and how the baker Abu Hasan used to weigh bread and sell it…

I left the bakery feeling sad again, I went to see the building where our apartment is, to find that no harm happened to it, I thanked God and went upstairs, to find that the door of our neighbor Um Jamil’s apartment was open, and I saw her sitting inside playing with her little granddaughter. She was pleased to see me and invited me in to drink some tea with her so I went in. While I was waiting for Um Jamil to prepare the tea, looking around inside the house, I saw a portrait hanging with a black scarf around it, there was a line written below it that said: “Martyr Jamil, whom the fires of war have taken away from between his family”. I went back with my memory, to see how Jamil used to come back with candy and toys to his little daughter, and how he used to play football with the neighbors’ boys in the past…

I greeted Um Jamil, then I left her house rapidly towards my time machine, telling it to bring me back to my present; as I’ve had enough of the terrible damage that I saw in my homeland, hoping that the crisis would end soon, but not as I’ve seen it in my visit to the future via my time machine; but rather to end with peace having prevailed, damage having stopped, and with getting rid of all the hatred and dark feelings that are as dark as the damage that the war has left behind, so that Syria would become better than it used to be.

آلــــــة الـزمـــــن

عندما كنا صغاراً كنا نتابع رسوماً متحركةً تدعى “آلة الزمن”، كانت تصور آلةً بمقدورها نقلنا إلى الماضي أو المستقبل لتعرض لنا قصصاً من الزمن الذي تنقلنا إليه. هنا والآن، في مخيلتي، أصبحت آلة الزمن حقيقة، فطلبت منها أن تأخذني إلى مستقبل سوريا ما بعد الحرب؛ فأخذتني بدايةً إلى حيث كانت مدرستي؛ فوجدتها وقد تهدمت جدرانها، وتحطمت أبوابها، وقُلِبَت مقاعدها رأساً على عقب، بعد أن كانت في الماضي تعج بالتلاميذ في الباحة، ويقوم المشرف بضرب الجرس معلناً انتهاء الاستراحة، ويجري بعض التلاميذ لكسب ما تبقى من الوقت لشراء المأكولات بسرعةٍ للصعود ثانيةً إلى الصفوف…

شعرت بالحزن الشديد لما رأيت، فأسرعت إلى آلة الزمن وطلبت منها أخذي إلى الحي الذي أتيت منه، وعندما وصلت رأيت المخبز القريب من بيتنا مهجوراً يكسوه اللون الأسود جراء ما تعرض له محيطه من القصف والدمار، بعكس ما كان عليه في الماضي؛ حينما كانت تنبعث منه رائحة الخبز الشهية، والناس يقفون في الطابور، والعم أبو حسن يوزن الخبز ويبيعه.

غادرت المخبز حزينةً من جديد، توجهت إلى البناء الذي فيه بيتنا فوجدته ولم يصبه مكروهٌ والحمد لله. وبينما أنا أصعد الدرج وجدت باب منزل جارتنا “أم جميل” مفتوحاً، ووجدتها هي جالسةً تداعب حفيدتها الصغيرة، فسرّت لرؤيتي ودعتني لأشرب الشاي معها. لبيت دعوتها ودخلت، وبينما كنت جالسةً أنتظر أم جميل وهي تعدّ الشاي وأنا أتأمل البيت وإذا بي أرى صورةً معلقةً يلفها وشاحٌ أسود وقد كتب تحتها: “الشهيد جميل الذي أخذته نيران الحرب من بين أحضان أهله”، فأخذت أعود بذاكرتي لأرى كيف كان جميل يعود إلى بيته محملاً بالحلويات والألعاب لابنته الصغيرة، وكيف كان يلعب كرة القدم مع أولاد الحارة في الماضي…

حييت أم جميل وغادرت منزلها مسرعةً إلى آلة الزمن وطلبت منها أن تعيدني إلى الحاضر، فقد اكتفيت من هول ما رأيته من الدمار الذي حل ببلدي، آملةً أن تنتهي الأزمة قريباً ولكن ليس على الحال الذي أرتني إياه آلة الزمن في المستقبل؛ بل أن تنتهي وقد عم فيها السلام وتوقف الدمار وانطوت الأحقاد والمشاعر السوداء كلون السواد الذي خلفته الحرب، وأن تعود سوريا لحالٍ أفضل مما كانت عليه.

Oxfam’s Host Community Team Works to Improve Living Conditions for Syrians and Jordanians who are Most in Need

Oxfam’s host community team has been working in different areas in Jordan since May where many Syrian Refugees are residing; particularly in Salt, Baq’aa Camp, and the areas of Safout and Ein Al Basha that are in the Balqa’ governorate. In addition to that, they have been working in informal settlements in east and south Amman, and will also begin working in different areas in the Zarqa’ governorate. Assistance delivered to Syrians and Jordanians in each location differs depending on the targeted area; this includes distribution of hygiene kits and cash assistance. Moreover, the team carries out monitoring and evaluation of the activities as well as delivers awareness raising sessions to beneficiaries to get their thoughts and opinions about the provided services and how to improve them.

فريق المجتمع المضيف في منظمة أوكسفام يعمل لتحسين مستوى حياة السوريين والأردنيين الأمسّ حاجة

يعمل فريق المجتمع المضيف التابع لمنظمة أوكسفام منذ شهر أيار الماضي في مناطق مختلفة في الأردن تستضيف عدداً كبيراً من اللاجئين سوريين، وهذه المناطق هي مدينة السلط ومخيم البقعة وضاحيتا صافوط وعين الباشا الواقعة في محافظة البلقاء، والمساكن العشوائية في جنوب وشرق العاصمة عمّان، إضافةً للبدء قريباً بالعمل في مناطق مختلفة ضمن محافظة الزرقاء. وتختلف المساعدات التي يخصص جزءٌ منها للسوريين وجزءٌ للأردنيين في المناطق المستهدفة من فريقٍ لآخر ضمن المشروع؛ حيث يعمل فريقٌ على توزيع الطرود الصحية، وفريقٌ آخر على توزيع المساعدات العينية، إضافةً لوجود فريقٍ للمتابعة والتقييم لجميع تفاصيل المشروع، علاوةً على ذلك فإن موظفي المشروع يقومون بإعطاء جلسات توعيةٍ والاستماع لآراء المنتفعين حول الخدمات المقدمة وطريقة تقديمها وكيفية تحسينها.

Um Hamza’s Faith

I met my neighbor Um Hamza, whom I haven’t seen in over two years now. I had heard that two of her sons were killed in the conflict, and I was paying my respects but couldn’t hold back my tears from the sadness I was feeling towards her. Yet she surprised me with her strength and endurance, and she started showing me pictures of her sons who passed away along with pictures of their children. She told me that the rest of her children are still in Syria, and that her grandchildren are now in Turkey. He strength made me ashamed of myself, for I wish all mothers have the strength and faith  of Um Hamza.

إيمان أم حمزة

إلتقيت جارتي أم حمزه التي لم أرها منذ عامين، وكنت قد علمت أنه استشهد لها ولدين، فقمت بتعزيتها ولم أتمكن من حبس دمعتي من شدة حزني عليها، إلا أنها فاجئتني بتماسكها وشده قدرتها على تحمل الألم، وبدأت تريني صور أولادها الشهداء وصور أولادهم أيضا، وأخبرتني أن لها أولاد آخرين بقيوا في سوريا، وأن أولاد إبنها الشهيد في تركيا، أشعرني ذلك كله بالخجل وتمنيت لو أن كل الأمهات الثكلى يتحلين بقوة إيمان كإيمان أم حمزه.
