The Cost of Armed Conflict on a Child’s Education

On January 19^th, 2015 UNESCO and UNICEF released a joint report on the estimated 58 million children worldwide that are denied their fundamental right to education. Globally, half of the 58 million out-of-school children have had their education disrupted by armed conflict. In zones of conflict only 65% of children reach the final grade of primary school, compared with 86% of children in the rest of the developing world.

An estimated half of all Syrian Children are now out-of-school due to the ongoing armed conflict. Over 50% of the 622,000 Syrian refugees registered by UNHCR in Jordan are 17 years old or younger.  Yet only half of the 300,000 plus Syrian refugee youth are attending school. Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD) – Legal Aid has been working to help address this education gap through the Voices program.

In the spring of 2014, Voice program community facilitators helped identify education gaps for Syrian refugees in Zarqa, Jordan. ARDD-Legal Aid responded by establishing the Voices of the Future project, a 6-week summer youth education program. Voices of the Future addressed not only the education gap among Syrian refugees, but the lack of after-school and summer education opportunities for Jordanian students in Zarqa. The summer sessions focused on the education needs that were determined by Voice beneficiaries via survey and house visits in the Gueria neighborhood of Zarqa. Based on the results a curriculum was created focusing on English as a foreign language, expression through art and developing youth leadership skills.

ARDD-Legal Aid is committed to supporting every child regardless of their background the right to an education. With the findings of the recent UNHCR report “Living in the Shadows” and the joint UNESCO-UNICEF’s report “Fixing the Broken Promise of Education for All” ARDD-Legal Aid calls on the international community to support refugee hosting countries like Jordan to ensure all children receive a quality education. The international community may not be able to end the fighting, but we can ensure that the children of Syrian will not be robbed of their future.

تكلفة الصراع على تعليم الطفل

في 19 كانون الثاني، 2015 قامت اليونسكو واليونيسيف بنشر تقرير مشترك حول 85 مليون طفل في العالم والذي يتوقع أنهم حُرموا من حقهم الأساسي في التعليم. عالميا، نصف ال 85 مليون طفل ممن هم خارج المدارس تمت تعطل دراستهم بسبب النزاع المسلح. في مناطق الصراع، 65% فقط من الأطفال يبلغون الصف الأخير من التعليم الابتدائي، مقارنة مع 86% من الأطفال في بقية العالم النامي

إن ما يقدر بنصف كامل أطفال السوريين هم خارج المدارس الآن بسبب النزاع المسلح الدائر. أكثر من 50% من ال 622000 لاجئا سوريا المسجلين في المفوضية السامية لشؤون اللاجئين في الأردن هم في سن السابعة عشر أو أقل. وبالرغم من ذلك، إن ما يقدر فقط بنصف ال 300000 وأكثر من اللاجئين السوريين الشباب يذهبون للمدرسة. إن النهضة العربية للديمقراطية والتنمية (أرض) – العون القانوني كانت تعمل من أجل معالجة هذه الفجوة في التعليم من خلال برنامج أصوات

في ربيع 2014، ساعد ميسرو المجتمع في برنامج أصوات في تحديد الفجوات في التعليم بالنسبة للاجئين السوريين في الزرقاء، الأردن. استجابت أرض – العون القانوني من خلال إنشاء مشروع أصوات المستقبل، برنامج تعليمي صيفي للشباب لمدة ستة أسابيع. قام أصوات المستقبل بتسليط الضوء ليس فقط على الفجوة في التعليم بين اللاجئين السوريين، بل وعلى قلة تواجد الفرص لنشاطات تعليمية ما بعد أوقات الدوام الرسمي أو في الصيف بالنسبة للطلاب الأردنيين في الزرقاء. ركّزت الجلسة الصيفية على الاحتياجات التعليمية التي تم تحديدها من قبل مستفيدي أصوات من خلال الاستبيانات والزيارات المنزلية في حي القويرة في الزرقاء. وبناء على هذه النتائج تم خلق منهاج يركّز على اللغة الانجليزية كلغة أجنبية، التعبير من خلال الفن، وتطوير المهارات القيادية لدى الشباب

إن أرض – العون القانوني ملتزمة بدعم كل طفل، بغض النظر عن خلفيته، فيما يتعلق بحقه في التعليم. مع النتائج التي توصل إليها تقرير المفوضية السامية لشؤون اللاجئين الذي صدر مؤخرا “العيش في الظل” والتقرير المشترك ما بين اليونسكو واليونيسيف “تجديد الالتزام بوعد التعليم للجميع” أرض – العون القانوني تناشد المجتمع الدولي من أجل دعم الدول المضيفة للاجئين مثل الأردن من أجل ضمان تلقي جميع الأطفال لتعليم جيد. يمكن للمجتمع الدولي أن لا يكون قادرا على إنهاء القتال، ولكن نحن باستطاعتنا أن نضمن أنّ الأطفال السوريين لن يُسلبوا من مستقبلهم

16 Days of Activism Zarqa Youth “Safe Spaces” Song Group

ARDD-Legal Aid worked with Dutch organization Syrious Mission to create a song about safe spaces and what this means to Syrian and Jordanian youth in Zarqa, Jordan. This was done as part of the Syrian Voices and Accountability project’s 2014, 16 Days of Activism campaign.
