Everyone has to work to be able to earn a living and provide for his/her family. However, this has become close to impossible for Syrian refugees. It is a tragedy difficult to overcome as, by law, they cannot work unless they have a work permit. And because work is necessary to be able to put food on the table, this work permit has become a life permit. Searching for a job is also a difficult process for Syrians because of the low wages, long working hours, and effort needed based on the person’s capabilities. Moreover, most of the people looking to work would normally have someone to support them; the elderly, women, and children.
The end of the search doesn’t mean the end of the problems, for in a month or two they will be found out and jailed for 3 days for not having a work a permit, released after signing a pledge promising not to work illegally again. That is why we wonder, why do we need to get a permit to live?
