Where are you going? Why? What are you running away from? Do you have any relatives in the Free Syrian Army? These questions and more were directed at Kawthar and her mother as they were crossing the border after a long and tiring trip. She has Thalassemia and Diabetes and is in dire need of a blood transfusion, and it is what compelled her mother to take her out of Syria in search for treatment that they were unable to find inside. But what they were faced with was not any better, as after visiting hospitals in Irbid and Ramtha it became apparent to them that she will not receive treatment if she does not register with the UNHCR. She was in this state for two months, fighting against her illness, until I met her and her mother by coincidence on my way to Mafraq. We talked and she told me her painful story that broke my heart and all I could think of is to seek the assistance of Legal Aid as they might help me find a solution for Kawthar. And as I was with them, the organization called for a different reason so I hurriedly told them about Kawthar’s story and I asked them to help her as much as they can. They soon called me back and informed me that Kawthar should go to Zarqa Public Hospital right away as they were informed of her case and arranged for her arrival. And indeed that is what happened where the hospital performed the necessary tests and gave her treatment free of charge. The organization also gave her papers to the UNHCR where Kawthar received the proper documents to be able to continue her treatment. I hope that you will be feeling better soon Kawthar, and I hope for a cure for all the people who are suffering and no one knows of their pain except for God.
